Worst-Case Groundness Analysis Using Positive Boolean Functions
نویسنده
چکیده
This note illustrates a theoretical worst-case scenario for groundness analyses obtained through abstract interpretation over the abstract domain of positive Boolean functions. A sequence of programs is given for which any P os-based abstract interpretation for groundness analysis follows an exponential chain. Another sequence of programs is given for which a state-of-the-art implementation based on ROBDD's gives a result of exponential size in only three iterations. The moral of the story is that a serious P os analyser must incorporate some form of widening to protect itself from the inherent complexity of the underlying domain.

Worst-case groundness analysis using definite boolean functions
This note illustrates theoretical worst-case scenarios for groundness analyses obtained through abstract interpretation over the abstract domains of definite (Def) and positive (Pos) Boolean functions. For Def, an example is given for which any Def-based abstract interpretation for groundness analysis follows a chain which is exponential in the number of argument positions as well as in the num...
متن کاملThe Boolean Logic of Set Sharing Analysis
We show that Jacobs and Langen's domain for set-sharing analysis is isomorphic to the domain of positive Boolean functions, introduced by Marriott and SSndergaard for groundness dependency analysis. Viewing a set-sharing description as a minterm representation of a Boolean function leads to re-casting sharing analysis as an instantiation dependency analysis. The key idea is to view the sets of ...
متن کاملA Reactive Implementation of Pos UsingROBDDsRoberto
The subject of groundness analysis for (constraint) logic programs has been widely studied, and interesting domains have been proposed. Pos has been recognized has the most suitable domain for capturing the kind of dependencies arising in groundness analysis. Its (by now standard) implementation is based on reduced ordered binary-decision diagrams (ROBDDs), a well-known symbolic representation ...
متن کاملTwo Classes of Boolean Functions for Dependency Analysis
Many static analyses for declarative programming/database languages use Boolean functions to express dependencies among variables or argument positions. Examples include groundness analysis, arguably the most important analysis for logic programs, finiteness analysis and functional dependency analysis for databases. We identify two classes of Boolean functions that have been used: positive and ...
